I have been back “home” in NYC for a week now and honestly, it’s been wonderful. The tour was more than I ever could have imagined and hoped for. I am fortunate to have lead a good life thus far but I have to say that those two months were definitely, without a doubt, some of the best of my life. I’m not sure how to begin to explain it all, but I would like to share some journal entries from days that had an impact on me during my trip… Here we go!

I kind of felt convinced that I was going to plant some roots in Seattle. After a month or so away though I just felt her whispering to me, “Marye, come back we love your energy and you love ours” she said in her green breathy tone. I saw a documentary on Bill Cunningham, the photographer for the New York Times Styles section while I was in Seattle. It made me think about all the artists who live here and the rawness of their experience. Something about it is so romantic to me. I guess I am one of those people who just LOVES this city; who feels a very deep commitment to it. Yeah. It feels nice to be home.

DAY 116. Penultimate day in SF. (May 20th, 2012) Today I walked/ran the “Bay to Breakers” run/walk with my dear friend Shannique. It was 8 miles and covered the city’s financial district all the way to the ocean. What an amazing way to see the city. It was like Halloween for adults: everyone was dressed up (except for me) and partying like it was 1999 – lol. Shannique and I chatted as we saw the bison (what?) in Golden Gate Park, more penises than we’d seen in both of our lives combined (many people were walking in the nude), and costumes that made me feel like I was marching in a pride parade. We stopped for coffee in the Haight, looked at eachother and said: “what an amazing city!” When we arrived to the finish line after 8 miles I laid on the beach for two hours. I couldn’t get enough. Unfortunately, I got a small sunburn on my back – ooppss!!:( Looks like I did get enough.

DAY 104 Oakland, CA (May 10th, 2012) I can’t stop smiling. I went to the copy center to make some flyers for my show next week and had the sweetest conversation with the woman working there and a customer who was making copies of her driver’s license. The customer could not figure out how to use the copy machine so I began to help her. She told me that she did not want to learn how to use technology; she was too old. I started to attempt to encourage her; 50 years old was not too old to learn. However, she insisted that it was and confided in me by telling me that she was a cancer survivor. I backed down about the technology bit and listened to her story. It was interesting, like two fold. Half of her was defeated but the other half of her was resilient and ready to fight for her life. Perhaps she just found out what it was that she wanted to fight for and what she was willing to let subside.
